A hatch is not a width. Fall River solar roof access review is checking 36 inches and a path on the street or driveway side. A hatched keep-clear note, with no dimension, will not pass a reviewer who is measuring those two things. Put the number on the roof plan. Then the rest of the fire check has a line to follow.
Athol Energy prepares the plan set. We do not install the array, and we do not stand in for the fire prevention office. The installer submits the drawings. Our job is to make the pathway readable in inches so the reviewer does not have to invent the width from a shaded band.
A keep-clear hatch fails the measurement
Shading a strip and labeling it keep clear tells the reviewer you intended to leave a path. It does not tell them how wide the path is. The checklist item is 36 inches. If the number is not on the sheet, the item is not shown.
Use a dimension string from the gutter to the ridge, tied to the array edge. A note parked at the eave is not a path a ladder can use.
Do this for both pathways. One labeled strip and a second strip that is only a color will not read as two paths. Each path gets its own 36 inches. If a dormer or a hip breaks the strip, dimension each leg. Do not write varies and leave the narrow spot for someone else to discover.
Fall River solar roof access needs a street-side path
For one- and two-family dwellings, Massachusetts fire plan-review checklists based on 527 CMR 1.00 ask for at least two pathways, 36 inches wide, from gutter to ridge. One of them is on the street or driveway side. That arrival side has to be obvious on the drawing.
Label the street. If the driveway is the side a ladder would actually use, label the driveway. A roof-only outline with no north arrow and no street name hides which path is the required one. Add a small site key if the roof plan is too tight for the street name. The point is that a reviewer can point to the arrival path without leaving the PDF.
527 CMR 1.00, the Comprehensive Fire Safety Code, is based on NFPA 1, 2021 edition, with Massachusetts amendments. It has been the state fire code framework since the December 9, 2022 edition, with the amendment package effective May 12, 2023. That history is not a substitute for the dimension. Write 36 inches on the path.
State checklist, not a city ordinance
The 36-inch pathways and the ridge bands below are state fire-code items used on municipal checklists. They are not a special ordinance of Fall River. The local fire prevention office can add a note on a particular house. Cloud that note when it arrives and dimension it. Do not apply the Town of Weston's extra street-face rule to a Fall River roof.
Every plane, and a ladder that can lie flat
Each roof plane that has PV needs a 36-inch pathway on that plane, on an adjacent plane, or straddling the two. If you only clear a path on the front slope and the rear slope is full of modules, the rear plane is not covered unless an adjacent path or a straddling path actually serves it. Say which case you used. A note that only says see path is not a case.
When the path straddles two planes, the sheet still has to show a 36-inch pathway. Dimension across the straddle so the width is readable. Draw the strip, then dimension the strip.
Pathways should avoid vent pipes, conduit, and mechanical equipment, so a roof ladder can lie flat. Mark those objects on the roof plan. If a vent sits in the clear width, the path is not clear. Shift the path or show the vent outside it. A conduit crossing the strip has the same problem.
- Two pathways, each dimensioned at 36 inches, gutter to ridge.
- One of those pathways shown on the street or driveway side, with that side labeled.
- Every PV plane covered on itself, on an adjacent plane, or by a straddling path that is still 36 inches.
- Vent pipes, conduit, and mechanical equipment drawn outside the path.
The roof attachment layout has to obey the same strips. A rail, a stagger, or a conduit run that wanders back into the 36-inch width undoes the roof plan. Draw attachments after the paths are locked. If hardware and pathway fight, the hardware moves.
Ridge inches belong on the same roof plan
Pathway width is the note that gets missed. The ridge still has to be dimensioned on that same sheet, or the fire plan is only half marked.
Not sprinklered: if the array is up to 33 percent of the plan-view roof area, keep 18 inches on each side of a horizontal ridge. If the array is more than 33 percent, keep 36 inches on each side. Sprinklered one- and two-family: 18 inches up to 66 percent of plan-view area, and 36 inches above that. Roof pitch of 2:12 or less: no ridge setback. Note the pitch when you use that exception.
Plan-view area is the denominator. Do not swap in the sloped area to shrink the percent. Write the areas on the plan so the 18 or 36 choice is traceable. Dimension both sides of the ridge. A keep-clear hatch along the ridge, with no inches, fails for the same reason the pathway hatch fails.
The bill names the utility
Do not guess the electric company. The interconnection application goes to the company on the electric bill. The city line does not choose the form. If the bill is missing, leave the utility name off the one-line until it arrives. A wrong company sends the request to a desk that does not own the service.
The one-line should use the company name exactly as the bill gives it, and the equipment on that one-line should be the equipment inside the pathways you just dimensioned. Interconnection drawings are a match to the bill, not a guess from the town name. Athol prepares that one-line. The interconnection customer submits the request.
Sheets the installer can hand over
The roof plan is the fire sheet. It should show two 36-inch pathways from gutter to ridge, one of them on the labeled street or driveway side, a 36-inch path serving every plane that has PV, obstacles outside those paths, and a ridge setback that matches the plan-view percent. The title block can cite 527 CMR 1.00 as the fire-code basis without a history lesson.
Permit design is the set that carries those dimensions. Massachusetts solar design applies the state checklist on a Fall River roof without calling it a local ordinance. A Northeast residential permit set still needs this roof's street side labeled and this roof's paths dimensioned. A shared template hatch will not pass.
If the field path moves, the record drawing has to carry the width that was actually left. As-built drawings should show the same kind of inch dimension the permit roof plan showed, updated to the built strip. A cloud that says the path moved, with no new number, repeats the original miss. If you need the hatch color to decide the width, the roof plan is not ready.
