Solar as-built drawings
As-built drawings record what was actually installed, not what was drawn six weeks earlier. They matter because closeout, incentive paperwork, and PTO all get compared against reality.
Why as-builts matter
Modules move. A vent, a hidden rafter, or a shading surprise shifts the layout, and the crew solves it on the roof. If the record set still shows the original plan, the inspector, the utility, and the incentive administrator all see a mismatch.
Rebates and performance-based incentives are the expensive version of this problem, since payment often depends on documentation matching the installed system.
What we capture
Final layout
Module positions, count, and orientation as built, with the reason for the change noted.
Electrical changes
Conductor routing, disconnect locations, and any equipment substitution checked against the permitted single-line.
Revision trail
A dated log so the record set explains itself without a phone call.
What we need from the field
Photos and a marked up copy of the permitted set are usually enough: overall roof shots, each array plane, the disconnect and meter area, and equipment labels showing model numbers.
A five minute photo routine at the end of the install saves an hour of reconstruction later. Crews that adopt it stop losing closeout time.
Where we work
Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut are the core desk, plus New York and Pennsylvania. Requirements differ: some towns want a record set on file, while others only care when something changed materially.
FAQs
Do we need as-builts on every job? No. They are needed when the install deviated from the permitted set, or when the AHJ, utility, or incentive program asks for a record set.
Do as-builts need a PE stamp? Usually not, unless the change was structural or the jurisdiction asks for a sealed record set.
Can you work from a marked up PDF? Yes. That plus field photos is the normal input.
