How Solar Permit Design Works | Athol Energy

How does solar permit design work? You collect the site and the AHJ rules, you draft a plan set the inspector can use, you coordinate the utility one-line so the interconnection application matches, you revise against comments, then you optionally as-built. That is the whole machine. Software names do not matter. Completeness does.

This is the process Athol Energy uses for Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, and Pennsylvania installer partners.

Intake

Send the site survey or a usable photo set, equipment list, utility bill if you have it, AHJ name, and the target submit date. If storage, roof work, or HOA constraints exist, say so now. Incomplete intake gets a short checklist. We will not start CAD on a missing inverter model and then guess.

AHJ overlay

Solar permit drawings are not a national template. Boston ISD, Providence, Hartford, NYC DOB, and a Pennsylvania borough do not share a sheet list. We apply that town’s checklist: fire pathways, structural letter yes/no, wet vs digital PE, application forms.

What is required for a solar permit, in general:

  • Site / roof plan
  • Electrical diagram
  • Structural attachment or PE letter when asked
  • Cut sheets
  • Labels
  • The town’s forms

Then the extras that town loves. See our state guides for code backdrop: MA, RI, CT, NY, PA.

Drafting

CAD the array to the survey. Size conductors. Place the disconnect where the utility will tolerate it (Eversource CT’s 10-foot note is a real example). Keep nameplate consistent with the interconnection application track you are aiming at.

Solar permit design at this stage is boring on purpose. Fancy covers do not pass review.

PE stamping when required

If the checklist or the occupancy needs a PE, a professional engineer licensed in that state seals the right sheets, wet or digital as agreed. That is PE stamping, not a logo.

File AHJ and utility in parallel

The building permit and the solar interconnection application should not wait on each other unless a town forces it. Matching one-lines are how you avoid a passed inspection on a design the utility did not approve.

Comments

AHJ letters get mapped item by item. Cloud the change. Revise. Do not send a new untitled PDF.

Issuance, install, inspection

The superintendent builds from the issued set. If the field moves, either a revision or as-built drawings before PTO.

Closeout

Utility completion package. Meter. Written permission to operate. Solar permit design does not replace PTO. It gets you to the inspection that PTO sits on.

Turnaround depends on stamp needs and AHJ complexity. Rush exists when an inspection failed or an interconnection window is closing. We will give a date at intake, not a slogan.

If you want this process on a live job, use permit design and send the AHJ plus the BOM. That is how solar permit design works here. There is not a more mysterious back office.

What solar permit drawings look like when they work

A superintendent can find the disconnect, the pathway dimension, and the attachment detail without calling CAD. Wire sizes match the one-line. Cut sheets match the BOM. The title block state matches the PE seal. That is how solar permit design works as a craft, not as a slogan.

Rush jobs

Rush is for failed inspections and interconnection windows, not for sales that forgot to send a survey. We will still ask for the BOM. Skipping intake to “save a day” usually costs a revision.

Where interconnection sits in the process

Permit design does not file the portal unless you hired interconnection too. Even then, completeness is the utility’s word. We can make the one-line match. We cannot make National Grid skip screening.

If you only want drawings, say so. If you want drawings plus portal-ready exhibits, say that. Mixing those on a PO is how files stall.

QA before we release

We look for missing dimensions, conflicting callouts, cut sheets that do not match the BOM, and disconnect notes the utility will hate. That QA is how solar permit design works as a review culture. Most resubmittals we see from other sets were preventable on that pass.

We will not start solar permit drawings without a frozen inverter SKU. Guessing SKUs to hit a date creates two later revisions: one for the AHJ and one for the interconnection application. That is how solar permit design works when it is done in the wrong order. Freeze first. Last, name the issued PDF in the crew chat the morning of install. Solar permit design fails in the field when the truck has rev A and the city has rev C.
