Commercial solar interconnection vs residential simplified is not a bigger PDF of the same form. Residential simplified is a screen, a simple diagram, and a matching AHJ SLD. Commercial work often adds studies, relay notes, transformer ratings, and a three-line the utility will actually mark up. Filing the house path on a warehouse because the portal still let you click “simplified” is how you restart the clock after drawings are already in plan check.
Athol Energy prepares interconnection packages so they tell the same story as the permitted set. The service page is interconnection. Massachusetts installer-facing notes live in our Massachusetts interconnection application checklist. Other states have their own screens. Do not export the Massachusetts simplified habit into SIR or Chapter 75 unchanged.
What commercial solar interconnection vs residential actually changes
Diagrams: houses often get a one-line. C&I often get a three-line with the point of interconnection, existing service equipment, and any new transformer. Equipment: houses name a module and an inverter. C&I may name reclosers, GSU transformers, and relay packages. Process: houses wait on a screen. C&I may wait on a study. Fees and timelines are utility-specific. We will not invent a dollar amount. If a number is not on the tariff in front of you, mark it [NEED SOURCE: utility tariff fee table] internally and read the tariff.
Drawings still freeze kW, inverter, and POI before the portal should be treated as true. If PE comments change those, reopen the application. Incomplete files stall both paths; see incomplete interconnection applications. Permit design should not invent a second inverter family “for the utility.”
Regional transmission context is ISO-NE [VERIFY URL] in New England and PJM [VERIFY URL] in Pennsylvania. Most residential jobs never see those queues. Some C&I and most utility-scale do. If your “commercial” job is really a wholesale generator, you are in a different post and a different plan set.
Matching the AHJ while the utility studies
The building official does not pause because a study is open. You can get a permit on equipment the study later rejects. That is the nightmare. Freeze equipment that can survive both, or hold the AHJ submit until the utility path is honest enough. We would rather hold a week than as-built a transformer the study killed.
Witness tests and PTO packets get heavier on C&I: settings sheets, photos of more cans, sometimes a commissioning report. Residential PTO is often photos and a simple form. Do not send a house photo pack for a 500 kW roof. Do not send a 40-page commissioning binder for an 8 kW house unless that utility asked.
Utility-by-utility, still not a national rule
Eversource MA vs Eversource CT are different. National Grid MA vs National Grid NY are different. Rhode Island Energy is one state, still not a Massachusetts form. United Illuminating is not Eversource. Con Edison is not PSEG Long Island. PECO, PPL, and Duquesne Light do not share a simplified checkbox. Name the utility on intake the same way you name the AHJ.
Municipal light plants in Massachusetts are another path. Do not drop an IOU simplified package on an MLP. They will not be flattered.
How we keep the two clocks from punching each other
Intake: AHJ, utility, kW AC, inverter, existing service, and whether a study is expected. We assign drawing weight from that, not from the sales flyer. Call Athol Energy at +1 (209) 266-2669 when a portal result comes back “failed screen.” Bring the letter. The SLD may need a change, or the application may have been the wrong path with a correct drawing.
Do not let procurement swap inverters during a study because the new one is cheaper. That is a new study input. Cheap inverters are expensive when they reset a nine-month clock. We will not silently update a portal against a sealed three-line.
What the SLD must prove on each path
Residential simplified: identity, a legal point of connection, ratings the screen can read, and labels. Commercial study: those plus fault current inputs, transformer polarity and ratings, grounding, and sometimes protection that the house SLD never showed. If you do not have transformer data, the study package is incomplete. Get nameplates. Do not guess kVA.
Export limiting and power control, if used to stay on a simpler path, must be listed equipment on the SLD. A verbal “we will curtail” is not a screen input. If the utility allows a certified PCS to change the path, put the PCS on the drawing and in the application the same way. If they do not, do not file as if they do.
Metering: houses may have a socket change. C&I may have CT cabinets, production meters, and utility-owned PTs. Show who owns which can. AHJs fail inspection when a “utility meter” on the SLD is actually your production meter and the utility still has to set theirs. Call them by name.
Operating constraints (no export, daytime export, nighttime charge for storage) belong in the application and on the SLD notes. A storage-plus-PV C&I job that files as PV-only simplified is two systems. File the system you will build.
If ISO-NE or PJM documents are in play, keep them in the study folder, not in the town permit PDF, unless the AHJ asked. Town reviewers do not need a cluster study to approve a roof. They do need the same inverter the cluster study used if that inverter is what you will install.
When the portal result should change the drawings
Failed screens that cite conductor size, transformer kVA, or a missing visible-break disconnect are drawing comments wearing a utility letterhead. Map them like AHJ comments: item, sheet, cloud. Failed screens that cite a tariff queue or a fee are not drawing comments. Do not redraw the SLD to “look more simplified.” Look at the kW and the path. If you are over the cap, you are over the cap.
Conditional approvals that list settings (anti-islanding, trip, export limit) belong on the SLD notes and in the commissioning packet. If the PE already sealed a different setting story, reseal or get a PE addendum. Field techs should not type settings from a portal email that design never saw.
Residential jobs that grow a battery after simplified approval are now a different path in some utilities. File the change. The AHJ as-built is not a substitute for a utility revision. C&I jobs that add a second inverter during construction are the same rule with more zeros on the study clock.
Meter set delays are not drawing delays, unless the SLD showed a socket that does not exist. If the utility cannot set because the can is wrong, that is a drawing and a field problem. Photograph the can at intake. A lot of “interconnection delay” is a socket that never matched the SLD.
Assign one person to own the portal and one person to own the SLD, then make them compare fields on a freeze date. When both hats are on one PM who is also running trucks, identity slips. Staffing a coordinator for a spike week is cheaper than restudying a 500 kW roof because the portal still had the sales inverter.
We will hold issue of an AHJ set if the portal already filed a conflicting kW and nobody will pick a winner. Two winners is the failure mode this whole series keeps naming. Pick one kW. Copy it everywhere. Then let the clocks run. If sales already quoted the old kW, that is a contract conversation, not a reason to keep two electrical stories alive in two portals. The drawings follow the system you will build, and the application follows the drawings.
If a study result changes inverters, treat it like a PE comment: stop procurement, update the three-line, update the portal, then tell the AHJ if the permit already went in. Residential simplified almost never has that study whip. Pretending it does not exist on C&I is how a warehouse sits with a sealed SLD for a product the utility already rejected. Build a hold point in the Gantt called “utility path honest” before “submit building.”
Pick the path the tariff actually offers, then draw that path. Commercial solar interconnection vs residential simplified is studies, diagram weight, and a harder freeze on equipment. Match the portal to the SLD, or both clocks will punish the same inverter swap twice.
