Worcester will not fail a job because you used the wrong New England marketing photo. It will fail a worcester solar permit when the snow-load note, the rafter spacing, and the National Grid one-line describe three different roofs. Inspectional Services wants a buildable set. National Grid wants the same inverters the town just approved. Those two sentences are the whole queue.
Athol Energy drafts Worcester packages for production installers: site plan, roof plan, attachment layout with dimensions, electrical single-line with conductor and conduit notes, cut sheets, and AHJ placard notes. That is the same deliverable we use across Massachusetts, tuned to this city’s housing stock. 20,000+ residential projects and 200 MW+ designed with 30+ installer partners does not mean we recycle a Boston ISD title block onto a Grafton Street triple-decker.
Worcester solar permit sheets that survive Inspectional Services
The city issues building and electrical permits through its Division of Inspectional Services. Put both permit types on the cover so the electrical inspector is not hunting for a building-only PDF. Name the contractor licenses, the equipment list, and National Grid as the EDC. If the cover still says Eversource from a Cambridge clone, stop and fix the title block before anyone else opens the file.
Worcester housing is older rafters, steep pitches, and hillside lots. Those three facts should appear as design criteria, not as a later excuse. Call out ground snow load and wind exposure for the actual site under 780 CMR as the city is enforcing it on the submit date. [CONFIRM AS OF 2026-09-19] A racking table from a Connecticut job with a lower snow number is not a Worcester structural note.
The roof plan has to show the array relative to ridges, hips, chimneys, and the street. Fire access for one- and two-family dwellings and townhouses follows 527 CMR 1.00: two 36 in. pathways from gutter to ridge on separate roof planes, one of them street- or driveway-side, plus ridge setbacks that step up when the array covers more of the plan-view roof. Dimension the paths. If the scaled width is 28 in., the hatch that says “3 ft” is a comment waiting to happen.
Attachment layout is the inspection
Worcester inspectors want to see where the lag goes, not a pretty module grid. The attachment layout should show rail direction, attachment spacing, lag diameter, embedment, edge distance, and the rafter or truss spacing from the site survey. If the survey says 16 in. on center and the layout is drawn at 24 in., the field crew will either overspan the rail or miss wood. Both show up as a failed inspection, not as a “field adjust.”
Steep pitches need a note the superintendent can use: walkable planes, hitch points if you are calling them, and which plane is the street-side access path. Hillside lots need a site plan that shows how the building sits on the grade, especially if a ground-mount or a steep driveway changes access. Do not drop a flat rectangle on an assessor parcel and call it a site plan.
When framing is unknown, say so on the sheet and send photos. Hidden rafters are why Worcester jobs pick up a structural look. Athol coordinates PE stamping when Inspectional Services, the fire reviewer, or the utility will not accept an unstamped set. Wet or digital follows what the city is taking that week. A PE stamp is not a default line item on every 8 kW residential roof.
Electrical sheet vs National Grid Exhibit A
The AHJ one-line and the National Grid Simplified sketch have to tell the same story. National Grid’s Massachusetts interconnection documents currently point at M.D.P.U. 1632, effective May 1, 2026. Use those exhibits. A 2024 PDF from a shared drive is how you file the wrong completion checklist.
Under 1632, the Simplified radial path is for listed inverter-based facilities 25 kW or less that match the service configuration (single-phase on single-phase, three-phase on three-phase) and pass the feeder screens. [CONFIRM AS OF 2026-09-19] If the service is three-phase and you stacked single-phase inverters, you are not on Simplified just because the AC kW is small. Show the actual service, main breaker, meters, AC disconnect if installed, and inverter models. Do not write “MIN 60A” for a disconnect you have not selected.
Conductor size, conduit, and rapid shutdown belong on the SLD. Worcester electrical comments we see are unlabeled production meters, missing grounding electrode notes, and inverter SKUs that do not match the cut sheets. SMART jobs still need the production meter called out even if National Grid’s sketch would have accepted a simpler drawing. The incentive desk and the utility desk are not the same inbox.
File interconnection in parallel with the town set only after the SKUs are frozen. Athol’s interconnection work is the same equipment list as permit design. If sales swaps modules after the worcester solar permit is in review, both the town revision and the National Grid hold will eat the same week.
What Worcester is not
Worcester is not Boston ISD Short Form vs Long Form. Do not import Boston’s “20 kWh” split, Landmarks language, or Mattox Higgins affidavit onto a Worcester cover. Worcester is also not a municipal light plant. Do not send a Concord CMLP three-line preference and tell Inspectional Services that “Massachusetts wants three-lines.” The city wants the sheets on its checklist. National Grid wants Exhibit A and the line diagram the portal lists.
Nearby towns are separate AHJs. Shrewsbury, Auburn, and Millbury sit next door and still want their own forms. Comments, as-builts, and PTO
When Inspectional Services returns comments, map each note to a sheet and a cloud. “Updated per comments” is not a response. If they asked for ridge dimensions, bubble the ridge. If they asked for a cut sheet, put the model number in the response letter. The same method works on National Grid holds: answer the deficiency, do not upload a new unlabeled PDF.
A building permit is not permission to operate. After inspection, National Grid still has to review completion documents, set the meter, and send written authority to interconnect. Public National Grid process pages describe completeness review, simplified screening, then conditional approval with a clock to upload completion docs, then meter work. Treat those as tariff business days, not as a sales promise. If the array moved, upload as-builts before you open a DG chatter thread about PTO.
Cut sheets have to be the models on the roof. Incomplete or “similar” files are the QA miss we catch before release. Placard notes should match 527 CMR 12.00 labeling as adopted. Rapid shutdown location has to be findable from grade. If the inverter is in a basement on a hillside house, the directory at the service has to say so.
Intake that matches a Worcester truck day
Send photos of the roof planes, rafter spacing if you opened a soffit, the equipment list, AHJ name as Worcester, and the National Grid account number. Incomplete intakes get a checklist, not a stalled draft. Rush work is for a failed inspection or a utility clock, not for missing snow-load criteria.
Installer questions on Worcester jobs
Do we need a structural letter on every triple-decker?
Not automatically. Unknown framing, long spans, extra roof layers, or a reviewer request are the usual triggers. We would rather flag it at intake than invent a stamp after the first comment letter.
Can we use an Eversource Simplified sketch?
No. Worcester is National Grid. Different portal, different exhibits, different completion packet. Reusing an Eversource file is a mismatch, not a shortcut.
Where do fire setbacks go?
On the roof plan, dimensioned. A general note that cites 527 CMR 1.00 without a scaled path will not survive a field measurement.
Is PTO the inspection sticker?
No. The town close is the permit card. PTO is National Grid’s written authorization. Do not energize on the sticker alone.
