PPL solar interconnection in 2026 is not last year’s one-line with a new date. Applications received on or after January 3, 2026 fall under Rule 12, DERIS. The inverter has to be a smart inverter. PPL will land a Company DER Management Device on the data port. If your drawing still looks like a 2022 Level 1 cartoon, the portal and the meter tech will both have questions, and the township inspector may red-tag a box nobody labeled.
Athol Energy’s Pennsylvania solar design and interconnection desk files PPL with the same permit design set the borough or township will see. Allentown, Bethlehem city, Harrisburg, Lancaster, and a long list of townships sit on PPL wires. Bethlehem Township is often Met-Ed. Read the bill before you open PPL’s portal.
PPL solar interconnection after Rule 12: what the SLD must show
Rule 12 (tariff PDF in PPL’s July 2026 electric tariff folder) applies to inverter-based alternative energy systems under the AEPS Act and to storage. New applications on or after January 3, 2026 must use smart inverters as Rule 12 defines them. The Company DER Management Device connects to the inverter data port, may use meter-network radios, and is installed per REMSI. PPL also describes retrofitting older systems on a long clock (the tariff text cites upgrades, inverter replacements, or January 3, 2041). For a new 2026 job, draw the device now.
The SLD needs the inverter manufacturer and model, UL 1741 SB / IEEE 1547-2018 callout, AC kW, the data port, and a Company-owned enclosure symbol with a note that PPL installs and maintains it. If you show that box as contractor-furnished, the township may ask for a cut sheet you do not have. If you omit it, PPL’s field will add a box the as-built never showed. Put a clear key: “PPL DER Management Device, Company furnished, see REMSI.”
PPL’s application guide for larger primary/secondary service jobs still wants a one-line, site plan, equipment data sheets, interconnection application, agreement, W-9, and a pole/grid number or coordinates at the PCC. Pole numbers look like XXXXXSXXXXX or XXXXXNXXXXX. Coordinates in decimal degrees, not degrees-minutes-seconds. Even a residential job benefits from a satellite pin that matches the meter. If you are applying without existing service, PPL points you to [email protected] rather than the standard renewable portal.
Chapter 75 still sits underneath. Level 1 is certified inverter 10 kW or less. Level 2 is certified inverter through 2 MW on radial or single-customer spot network. PPL’s own size language in customer flyers often talks 25 kW as a review-time break. Those are not the same number. A 12 kW certified inverter is Chapter 75 Level 2 and may still be a “small” PPL review. Pick the Chapter 75 form correctly, then meet Rule 12 hardware rules on the drawing.
Portal, email, and the certificate of completion
Existing-service applications go through pplelectric.com/renewable as of PPL’s 2025 flyer. Under 25 kW, that flyer listed [email protected]. 25 kW and greater listed [email protected]. Confirm the live portal before you train a new coordinator on an email address from a PDF. Electronically sign the interconnection agreement when Adobe/Ecosign sends it. If equipment changes, resubmit. PPL is explicit on that point.
After construction, the local inspection and PPL’s certificate of completion path control energizing. PPL’s customer-owned generation page says you are not permitted to interconnect without approval. Systems 500 kW or larger had extra PUC recommendation language in the 2025 flyer. Commercial jobs should expect more than a residential email.
Storage needs its own approval. A battery added after PTO is a new application, and Rule 12 still wants a smart inverter and a management device path. Draw export versus non-export the way the agreement will be signed, not the way the sales deck hoped.
AHJ sets in PPL towns
Pennsylvania UCC is statewide. Enforcement is local. Allentown, Reading, and small townships using third-party agencies will each want site, roof, attachments with dimensions, electrical SLD, cut sheets. The DER Management Device must appear on the electrical sheet so the inspector does not treat it as mystery utility furniture. Rapid shutdown placards stay AHJ. REMSI notes stay PPL. Do not paste a full tariff onto A-101.
Some townships want a PE on structural attachments, especially on older row roofs or long-span commercial. PE stamping is Pennsylvania-licensed when it is required. PPL does not issue PE stamps. A PPL approval letter is not a UCC permit.
Rate notes belong in the PM’s file, not as construction notes: PPL’s flyer said systems over 50 kW require a non-residential rate, and only certain rate schedules qualify. If sales sized a 60 kW array on a house rate, that is a tariff problem that will show up in interconnection, not in plan check. Fix it before we draw a 60 kW SLD.
Lehigh Valley boundary mistakes
City of Allentown and City of Bethlehem are typically PPL. Bethlehem Township and parts of Northampton County are often Met-Ed (FirstEnergy). Easton area likewise. Service areas coverage does not change the utility. If you file PPL on a Met-Ed meter, you will redo the one-line for a different portal and a different device story. Rule 12 is PPL-specific. Do not draw a PPL DER Management Device on a PECO or Duquesne job.
Intake: bill screenshot, AHJ name, roof and service photos, equipment list with UL 1741 SB inverter, and whether storage is in scope. We will place the Company device on the SLD, keep the township set constructible, and keep Chapter 75 Level honest.
REMSI, working space, and inspector arguments
REMSI is PPL’s rules for electric meter and service installations. The DER Management Device is called out as a sealed utility enclosure under those rules. Show working space in front of the inverter and the device so a township electrical inspector does not fail the wall as overcrowded. If the only wall is behind a boiler, say so at intake. Relocating an inverter after PPL designed the radio path is a change order you will eat.
Labeling has to distinguish customer rapid-shutdown equipment from Company sealed enclosures. If the inspector opens a PPL seal, that is a utility problem. If the inspector cannot tell which box is which, that is a drawing problem. Put a placard note on the AHJ sheet: “Do not break Company seals on DER Management Device.”
Long AC runs on barns and pole buildings are common in PPL’s rural book. Voltage drop is an AHJ and a PPL issue. Show length on the site plan. If PPL’s review later requires a conductor change, update the township set before the wire is pulled. Do not “fix it in the field” and hope the certificate of completion still matches Part 1.
For commercial rooftops, PPL’s larger-application package wants ownership attestation on letterhead and, for new primary service, a description of structures on site. A 3 MW array with “n/a” in the structure box gets a deficiency. Put the building, the PCC, and the access road on the site plan even if the town already has a civil set. PPL reviewers do not open the town zip.
If the customer’s rate is wrong for the kW you drew, stop. A residential rate with a 60 kW array is not something the SLD can paper over. Get the account onto a qualifying schedule, then draw. Systems that need a new service should not be forced through the existing-service email. Use the new-service path PPL published, and expect the PCC coordinates to matter.
Third-party inspection agencies in townships around Allentown and Harrisburg will ask for cut sheets on every inverter and every racking part. Include the smart-inverter SB certificate. If the agency has never seen a DER Management Device, the note on the SLD is what keeps the inspection from turning into a debate. Offer PPL’s customer-owned generation page as the source, not a blog. Photograph the Company enclosure after PPL sets it so the as-built matches the roof and the portal.
PPL solar interconnection after January 3, 2026 is a hardware change, not a new logo on last year’s PDF. Call +1 (209) 266-2669 before you bid an inverter that cannot take the data-port device. If the inverter cannot accept the Company DER Management Device, stop the bid. Rule 12 is not a title-block sticker. Show the device on the electrical sheet with a manufacturer-neutral callout until PPL assigns the hardware, then as-built the serial after they set it. A house that passed township inspection before the radio showed up still needs that box on the record set, or the next visit looks like unlabeled mystery hardware on a closed permit.
