An evcs solar design permit goes wrong when the charger, the PV backfeed, and the existing service are three stories on two drawings. The AHJ cannot tell whether the bus is legal. The utility cannot tell whether the interconnection still matches. The inspector finds a 60 A charger the PV-only SLD never mentioned. East Coast jobs fail that way in parking lots next to rooftop arrays and on houses that added a Level 2 in the garage after the solar permit printed.

How an evcs solar design permit fights the PV SLD
PV is a source. EVSE is a load, often continuous. They meet at a bus, a feeder, or a new service. The SLD has to show both, with conductor sizes, breakers, and the load calculation the AHJ asked for. If solar was permitted last year and chargers are this year, the new drawing still shows the PV as existing, not as “by others” with no ratings. Existing PV changes the bus math. Pretending it is not there is how you overload a panel the solar inspector already approved.

Permit design for combined jobs includes a site plan with stall striping, bollards, accessible stalls if required, and the solar array or carport. Do not drop chargers on a roof plan that cannot see the parking lot. Do not drop PV on an EV site plan that cannot see the roof. Two site plans are fine if they key to each other. Two unkeyed plans are a bounce.
Service upgrades nobody budgeted
A 200 A house with PV backfeed may not take a 60 A continuous charger. A 400 A commercial service may not take a DCFC cabinet. The combined design has to say upgrade or not. If you upgrade, the utility file is a service change as well as a PV interconnection. Keep interconnection for the generator side honest, and file the load side the way that utility wants. Do not raise PV kW on the application to “make room” for chargers. That is not how buses work, and it wrecks the generation queue.
Carports with PV and hanging chargers are one structure and two electrical systems. Foundations, wind, and snow are structural PE. Feeder routing in the canopy is electrical. See commercial and utility when the canopy is the project, not a house roof plus a wall charger.
AHJ split vs one permit
Some towns want a separate EVSE permit. Some want one electrical permit. Some want fire review on DCFC that they never wanted on a house Level 2. Ask at intake. If you already submitted PV-only, adding chargers mid-review is a revision, not a sidebar email. If inspection is this week and the crew “just added a charger,” you need an as-built and maybe a failed sticker. Draw it or do not install it.

How we intake combined jobs
Send solar equipment, charger model and quantity, existing service photos, and whether the stalls are in the same permit. Call Athol Energy at +1 (209) 266-2669. Cut sheets for chargers belong in the packet if they are in the permit. Cable lengths and mounting heights belong if the AHJ asked. Accessible reach ranges are civil/architectural. If you need them, say so. Do not ask a solar PE to stamp ADA striping they did not design.
Residential garage vs parking-lot C&I
A single Level 2 in a garage is a branch-circuit problem plus the PV backfeed already on that panel. Show the charger, the breaker, the conductor, and the indoor vs outdoor rating. If the inverter is also in the garage, working clearances for both pieces of equipment have to work together. Stacking a charger over an inverter because the wall was empty is an inspection fail.
Parking-lot C&I is site design: bollards, wheel stops, lighting, and sometimes payment pedestals. Feeders may be underground across a drive aisle the fire lane needs. Coordinate with the solar carport piles so a charger footing is not drawn through a pile. If two contractors install the two systems, one SLD still has to own the service. Split SLDs that both claim the same spare breaker are how you double-land a bus.
Make-ready conduit with no chargers is a civil/electrical permit of its own in some towns. If you are only trenching for later EVSE while installing solar now, say make-ready on the drawings and do not show charger loads as existing. If the AHJ wants empty conduit sized, size it. Do not label 1/2 inch EMT as future DCFC.
Demand management and power control systems that throttle chargers so PV can stay are a listed-system problem. If you rely on that to make the bus legal, the listing, the CT locations, and the SLD notes have to show it. A salesperson’s “the software will handle it” is not a permit document. If we cannot put the control method on the SLD, we cannot use it in the load calc.
Utility programs for chargers are not SMART and not NY-Sun. Do not mix incentive PDFs. Keep generation incentives with generation drawings. Keep charger rebates in their folder. The AHJ does not need either to approve a safe bus, and mixing them creates comments about program names that do not belong on an SLD.
Sequence when solar is already installed
Existing PV is existing. The EVSE permit still has to show it. Get the as-built SLD, not the original sales layout. If the solar was as-built poorly, fix identity before you add load. Stacking a charger on a fictional bus is how both systems get a failed sticker. If you did not install the solar, still show it as existing with ratings from nameplates, not from a neighbor’s typical.
Main-panel upgrades with PV already backfeeding need a shutdown plan for the day of the swap. That plan is a construction note, not a PE snow story. The SLD should show the new service equipment and the PV connection method after the swap. If you will land PV on a new load center, the interconnection application may need a revision because the point of connection moved. Coordinate that before the panel truck is in the driveway.
Network services and some urban secondaries restrict generation and can also restrict large EVSE. If the utility already fought you on PV export, ask before you add 150 A of chargers. The AHJ load calc and the utility service letter are different papers. You can pass plan check and still get a utility no. Hold the EVSE install until the service letter is real when the load is large. Level 2 on a house is usually smaller. DCFC is not.
Signage at parking lots: EV, fire, and PV plaques compete. If the fire marshal already set a PV plaque location, do not cover it with an EV parking sign. Combined site plans should show both. Combined inspections should walk both. Split contractors love to say the other trade owns the wall. The owner owns the wall. The drawings should too.
If the charger vendor sends their own one-line, it still has to merge with the PV SLD. Two one-lines that both claim spare breaker 4 are a double tap on paper. We merge them or we reject the vendor sheet. Pretty vendor CAD that ignores PV is not a permit document on a solar site.
One service, one honest SLD, two systems called by name. That is an evcs solar design permit that East Coast AHJs can approve. If the charger is real, draw it. If the PV is real, keep it on the bus math. If both are real, stop pretending they are separate planets.
